 Free FLAVA webinars

We have added FLAVA workshops throughout the school year to serve the professional development needs of Virginia educators and those of members of our sister state organizations in Virginia's two regional organizations, the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) and the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT). Each workshop provides one hour of credits toward license recertification.

This year our registration process is a little different as we are opening our workshops to members of our sister states in Virginia's two regional organizations, the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) and the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT). You must register individually for each session and then a day or two before the workshop, you will receive a Zoom link. All times are Eastern.

New Book: Universal Memorization Method For Conjugating Regular Spanish Verbs, For Students And Teachers.

By Alexander Van Berg

First, this book is a canonical and accessible implementation of a relatively difficult goal: State-of-the-art mnemonics properly fitted to language learning.  In a way, this is a seminal publication.

Second, this book pushes forward what academia should have adopted a long time ago.  It teaches semi-complex material through basic, intelligent mnemonics, rather than relying on rote memorization.  In doing so, we are getting closer to the state-of-the-art, rather than limiting students’ learning strategies to the stone ages.

Third, the use of this book makes it more likely that additional state-of-the-art books will be adopted by academia.  You are creating positive momentum in the realm of students’ learning strategies.

To the best of my knowledge, you won’t find anything of this caliber in the marketplace today, with content that reaches anywhere near this level of quality.

This book makes state-of-the-art mnemonics accessible to any English-speaking student learning Spanish, without the need for their conscious awareness of the mnemonics field of study.  The student is merely a consumer of the effective mnemonic system that was designed.  It requires no up-front effort on their part to “get up to speed” on any particular mnemonic technology (e.g. a “memory palace” or “peg lists”).

At the end of a Spanish course, and after several months have passed, how many students will truly remember how to conjugate regular Spanish verbs over 10 standard tenses and 8 standard moods?  If our results are not yet perfect, then our curriculum will definitely benefit from this book.  I certainly recommend and even challenge VFLA and its members to incorporate this content into relevant Spanish-learning curriculum.

Thank you,

Alexander Van Berg

CIEE Global Navigator Summer Abroad

CIEE’s Global Navigator High School Summer Abroad programs are based on U.S. high school learning standards and provide students with the experience of a lifetime during 3- or 4-week programs in the summer.  Students can select programs focused on language immersion or to work as a community to focus on global issues like social justice or climate action.

On program, students gain real-world experience in language, science, government, business, and arts. Pre- and post-program surveys indicate that over 90% of students return feeling more competent and confident in themselves and in their area of study. Additionally, parent surveys indicate that students return more independent and ready to face their futures

CIEE is also the steward of the $5.4 million Global Navigator Scholarship fund, the largest of its kind for study abroad programs. These scholarships provide 10%-100% of program fees based on financial need eligibility. These scholarships work to ensure that this opportunity is available to all students.  The deadline to apply for scholarships is January 18, 2023
